Craft Patterns for ABC, I Believe

Cardboard File Box

What you will need: Macaroni and cheese box, glue, paint, and decorative trims (optional)

What to do:
1. Carefully open up the ends of your box. Leave the side glued together. Flatten out the box so that the front of the box is lying in front of you as show in the first diagram. One of the side panels of the box should be on the top. The top and bottom flaps should be laying flat also as shown in the picture.
2. Cut the top fold as shown with the top red line in the first diagram. Cut 1" down on the front of the box as shown in the first diagram by the second red line.
3. The box should still be laying flat. Remove the part you cut away. Your box should look like the second diagram.
4. Measure 1" down from each side of the box (the top and bottom tabs) and then draw a line up to top where the bottom or top tabs meat the back panel as shown in the picture. Cut away the triangle shape.
5. Turn the box inside out and glue it back together.
4. Have the children paint the box and glue on decorative trims.
5. You may also want to glue magnets to the back of the box so that the boxes can be stored on the refrigerator.

If you don't have Macaroni & Cheese Box, you can use this pattern. Cut the pattern from card stock. Cut on the solid lines and fold on the dotted lines. Glue the side flaps closed.

Arnie the Ant

What you will need:  Black poster board, black pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes, glue, tape, scissors, and a hole punch.

What to do:

  1. Before class print out the ant pattern and cut the shapes from black poster board. You will need two ant shapes per ant. Print out the note pattern and cut them apart.
  2. Use one pattern to punch holes in the ant's body where indicated with a very small hole punch. Don’t use a hole punch that makes big holes. If you don’t have a small hole punch, use a large needle. Put a white mark over the hole with some chalk so the children can find the hole. Punch holes for the antenna in the other body pattern.
  3. Cut pipe cleaners in half for the legs.  You will need two and one half pipe cleaners per ant.
  4. Show the children how to stick the half pipe cleaners through one hole on the side of the ants' body and bring it under the body to the corresponding hole on the other side of the ants body. Show them how to bend the legs.  Do this for the other 2 sets of holes.  When all the pipe cleaners are in place tape them down on the under side of the ant.  Use the other half pipe cleaner for the antennas. Glue the two patterns together so that the pipe cleaners going across the pattern are on the inside. Don't glue the mouth closed. Tape the note in his mouth.
  5. Glue wiggly eyes on the face.

Lion Game Craft

What you will need: Two or three Styrofoam dinner plates or heavy duty paper plate for each lion, one small paper plate, acrylic paint, glue or staples, large paper clip, and sticky note paper or plain paper.

What to do:

  1. Cut out legs, ears, and a tail from one paper plate or a Styrofoam tray. I cut the feet from around the rim of the paper plate so that they naturally bend down. Try not to have the feet and tail stick out too far. This makes it harder to spin because the tail and legs keep bumping on things.
  2. Glue or staple the legs and tail to the top of one plate.
  3. Cover that paper plate with another paper plate to form the lion’s body. The plates should be glued or stapled top to top.
  4. Fold the small plate in half to form the cat's head. Glue ears to the head at the fold. Glue the head to the body.
  5. Paint the lion.
  6. Write questions about the lesson on small cards.
  7. Secure the cards with a large paper clip or clothespin.
  8. Practice spinning the lion before class.
  9. If you are not using the cards in the mouth, glue a small rock or something heavy on the head side of the lion.  This will make the lion easier to spin.

Stuffed Lion

What you will need: Crayons or markers, Small plastic food baggies (don’t have to be zip-lock), yellow pompoms (large ones are better) OR you can substitute tissue paper (scrunched up balls), yellow and orange construction paper, stapler, staples, glue sticks, scissors.

What to do:

  1. Before class print out the lion head pattern (Large file or small file) and the body pattern (Large file or small file)
  2. Use the pattern for the mane to cut out of orange construction paper. Cut slits all around the perimeter of mane before gluing the lion’s head on top of the mane. Use patterns to cut arms and legs out of yellow construction paper.
  3. In class have the children color and cut out the lion head.
  4. Glue the head in the center of the mane (mane should have the long side going horizontal).
  5. Cut tiny squares (2” X 2”) and scrunch up into little balls – if using tissue paper. Paper tissue paper balls or pompoms into plastic bags. Fold top corners of plastic bags down and staple. Staple top of bags closed. Staple onto the back of head. Staple arms under mane. Staple legs to back of the bottom of bag.

Lion face with Noodle Mane

 What to do:

  1. Before class print out the lion head pattern (Large file or small file) onto card stock and make copies.
  2. If you would like the noodles to be orange, place some red food dye in a large Ziploc bag, add about a 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol, and place the noodle inside.  Lightly shake the bag until the noodles turn orange.  Remove the noodles and place on a paper towel to dry.
  3. In class have the children color the lion face and mane and then glue on noodles.

Scaredy Cat Hand Puppet Craft for Kids

What you will need: card stock (heavy paper) orange construction paper or computer paper, crayons, scissors, glue or tape.

What to do:

1. Print out the patterns for the top of the head (Large file or small file) and the jaw (Large file or small file) onto cardstock. (I used a tan color).

2. Before class cut out the patterns and assemble them if you don't have much time in class.

3. Starting with the top of the head (the pattern with the eyes) fold on the fold lines and also make a crease from the top of the nose to the top of the dotted lines as shown in the picture. Glue the smaller trapezoid shape to the center tabs. This will be the roof of the lions mouth. Then bring down the sides of the larger trapezoid and glue over the tabs that have the smaller trapezoid glued to it.

4. To make the jaw, fold in on all the dotted lines except the top fold. The tab should be on the inside. Glue the tabs down to form an envelope shape. Fold the top tab away from the opening in the envelope. Glue the tab onto the inside of the lion's head so that the opening of the envelope shape is on the outside. The child should be able to put his fingers in the lion's head and his thumb in the lion's jaw and open and close the mouth by moving their fingers and thumbs away from each other.

5. In class show the children how to cut long strips of construction paper about 1/2" thick (Or cut them before class). Have them curl the construction paper strips around a pencil or crayon and then glue them to the head. To finish glue the ears on and color the puppet.

  2. In class you can have the children color the bees with yellow and black markers, but I think it would better to paint the craft spoons before class with really bright yellow paint and just have the children color in the stripes with black markers in class.
  3. Show the children how to glue on the wings and eyes. You could use a tiny black pompom for the nose.

Plaster Bee

What you will need: Plastic spoons, Plaster of Paris, 3/4” round magnets (optional), tiny wiggly eyes, hot melt glue gun, black pipe cleaners,  red paint or markers, black and yellow paint or markers, and black and yellow fun foam.

What to do:

  1. Set the spoons up so that the cup of the spoon will hold the Plaster of Paris evenly without spilling out. You will need to use a book or something to lift up and set the long ends of the spoons on. You can also use play dough to keep the cup of the spoons from moving when you are pouring the plaster, but it isn’t really necessary.
  2. Mix the plaster according to the directions. Pour a spoonful of plaster into each plastic spoon and then place a magnet in the center.
  3. When the plaster is dry remove it from the spoons. Let the plaster shapes dry overnight and then glue on a head cut from black fun foam, tiny eyes and yellow wings cut from fun foam.

What to do:

1. Paint the Styrofoam egg shape pink and let it dry.

2. Wrap three pipe cleaners around each other to make the neck. Glue a pink pompom onto one end of the pipe cleaners for the head. Cut a beak shape from white fun foam and color the end black with a permanent ink marker. Glue the beak onto the pompom. Glue on wiggly eyes. Stick the other end of the pipe cleaner neck into the egg shape body at the wider end of the egg.

3. To make the legs, stick a pipe cleaner inside a pink straw. Make two. Cut to the length you would like the legs, but leave some of the pipe cleaner sticking out of the straw at the feet end. Stick the legs into the egg shape as shown. (Use hot melt glue to secure the legs so they don't fall out.)

4. Cut webbed feet shapes from pink fun foam. Cut two for each foot. Stick the pipe cleaner that is sticking out from the straw through one layer of the webbed foot shape and bend it so it is laying flat against the foot. Glue another webbed foot shape over the end of the pipe cleaner and to the back of the webbed feet.

5. Glue pink feathers to the egg shaped body to finish.

6. Have fun posing the flamingo by bending his neck and feet. See if you can balance him so he can stand on his own.

Comments abou this Craft: I just wanted to give some helpful tips for the craft. I am in a hurry – always. I only have about 6 – 10 minutes designated for craft so I have to do much of the craft prep myself and just leave the assembly for the kids. I bought a huge square of florist foam and one package of florist wire (the wire was pre-cut into lengths). I inserted the wire into each egg shape and stuck it down in the foam square (so that all the eggs were sticking up out of the foam square on the wire lengths – it was like having 20 pairs of extra hands.) This way when I spray painted the eggs pink I didn’t have to touch them. After they dried I sprayed on spray adhesive and put on the feathers while they were still on the wire. It worked great for the all the “spraying” parts.

Also, I wasn’t sure about making the beak out of white foam so I bought what my craft store called bump chenille pipe cleaners in white and cut them apart at each “bump”. If you fold them in half and glue the thick end to the face of the bird, it is a pretty realistic beak shape – the thin end becomes the beak and is even open like a beak would be. I will have the kids color them black and assemble the rest of the bird during class. I am looking forward to teaching this lesson this week. I just thought I’d share these assembly tricks with you.
