Practice Speaking Without Talking Activity

1. Before class print out the communication sheet and cut the strips apart.

2. Place the strips in a bag.

3. In class have your children take turns picking a strip out of the bag and then try to communicate with their classmates what is on the strip without talking. If you have younger children that cannot read, take the children out of the room and read them what the strip says and then have them go back into the room to try and get the other students to do what it says.

At the end of the game ask your students how they felt when they couldn't speak what they were trying to communicate. Ask them if it was difficult to understand what the person wanted to say who couldn't speak. Tell them to imagine what it would be like not being able to tell someone what they needed, how they felt, or call for help.  Ask them to give you some situations in which it would be problematic not being able to speak. For example, they may say, "It would be scary if you couldn't speak to tell someone that a wild animal was about to attack him."   "If you couldn't hear, you wouldn't know when someone is calling you to dinner."

Act Out the Story

1. Pick children to be Jesus, part of the crowd, the deaf man, and the deaf man's friend.  As you read the verses have your children act out the story.

2. Pick one child to be the reader or read the verses yourself.  Mark 7:31-37  (Tell the child that is "Jesus" to not really spit, but just to pretend, when you read the part of Jesus spitting.)
