"Jesus Protects Me" Police-Theme Bible Lesson for Sunday School
The following Crafts and Activities come from the Bible Lessons Series "Jesus Protects Me" on The Resource Room where you will find a complete lesson with crafts, activities, and printable memory verse cards.
"Guard Your Heart" Activity Sheet
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23, NIV, Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23, KJV
Scripture References:Matthew 10 - Jesus Sends out the Twelve Disciples
In this lesson children learn that Jesus is a lot like a policeman; he protects and watches over us.
He protects us from our biggest enemy - Satan. We should also be like the police and guard our hearts. When we break God's laws we can call on Jesus, say we are sorry, and he will forgive us.
In class have your children color the picture and then circle any word that describes something that they should guard against.
When your children are finished, read each word, discuss what it means, and ask your children if they think that it is something they should guard their hearts against.

Guard Your Heart Pocket Craft
What you will need:
Card Stock
Yarn or String
Hole Punch
Scissors
What to do:
1. Before class print out or draw a heart pattern onto card stock (Heavy Paper). Cut the top off of one heart shape.
Place the back and front heart shapes together and punch holes around the edges of the hearts through both heart shapes. (Patterns for this craft are available to members on The Resource Room)
2. Print out the word cards and cut them apart. Some of the words should be things that you should allow in your heart and others should be things that you should guard against.
3. In class have your children lace the cards together using yarn or string. To make it easier to lace wind tape around one end of the string or yarn or dip the ends in hot wax.
4. When your children are done making their hearts have them place the words that describe something we should let in our hearts into the heart pocket and leave the other words out. Check to make sure they have the correct words in the hearts.

Just wanted to let you know that the kids loved this craft!! One of the little boys (Pastor's kid, of course!) saw the craft and said he didn't want to make it. Once he got started "sewing", he absolutely loved it, and wanted to do another one!! And as soon as Sunday School was over, he quickly left the room to show it to his mom, and he told her all about the lesson. Made my day!!
"I Will Guard My Heart" Police Hat Craft
What you will need:
Card Stock or Construction Paper (Heavy Paper)
Scissors
Paper Glue (Elmer's Rubber Cement) or Clear Tape
Stapler
What to do:
1. Before class print out the Top of the Hat Pattern, Bill Pattern, and the Badge Patterns and cut them out. There are five badge patterns for each hat pattern. (Patterns for this craft are available to members on The Resource Room and as an instant download)
Instant Digital Download - Hat Pattern Only
2. In class have your children color the hats and badges and then glue them together.
3. To assemble cut slits along the top of the bill on the dark lines and fold them up. Glue or tape the bill and the top of the hat together at the middle and then glue or tape the rest together working from the middle out. If you are using rubber cement place glue on both sides that will be stuck together, wait a few seconds until they get tacky, and then stick them together bending the top of the hat around to fit the curve of the bill pattern.
4. To finish, staple the band to the back of the hat to fit the children's heads. Put a piece of tape over the bent edges of the staple so that the children's hair doesn't get stuck in the staple.
If you don't have time to make the hats, you can just use the badges. Place double-sided tape or rolled up pieces of tape on the back of the badges and stick them to the children's clothes.

Play "Guard Your Heart" Bean Bag Game
What you will need:
Large Box
Pink Card Stock or Construction Paper
Rice Bags or Very Soft Balls
Masking Tape
Swimming Pool Noodle
How to Prepare:
1. Before class print out a large heart shape from pink card stock or poster board. Write "Guard Your Heart" and the Bible verse reference on the Heart and tape it to a large box.
2. Make some small rice bags by gluing 3" x 3" pieces of felt together on three sides. Pour two to three tablespoons of rice into the pouches and glue them closed.
3. Write the following words on pieces of masking tape and tape them to the rice bags: Truth, honesty, justice, purity, love, goodness, virtue, praise-worthy, gentleness, peace, patience, lies, dishonesty, bad thoughts, bad language, selfishness, jealousy, disobedience, greediness, and laziness.
4. Cut a pool noodle in half to make a bat. If you don't have a pool noodle, you can use rolled up newspaper. To make a newspaper bat place four or five sheets of newspaper on top of each other and roll from one corner to the opposite corner (not side to side) and tape the bat closed in the center. Then push in the pointed ends of the paper that is at the top and bottom of the bat.
To Play:
1. In class explain to your children that there are different words written on each rice bag, some describe things that you should welcome into your heart, and others you should guard against.
2. Tell your children that you are going to read the words on the rice bags and then throw the rice bags into the box. If the words describe something that belongs in their hearts, they should let the rice bag fall into the box. If the word describes something they should guard against, they should try to bat the rice bag away from the box so it doesn't fall in.
3. Have your children take turns at the bat. They should stand to one side of the box when they are up to bat. Let each child bat, or not bat, at all the rice bags before another child takes a turn. Then count how many rice bags are in the box. If any of the wrong words end up in the box, subtract those from the number of correct bags. The child that has the highest score wins.
