Salt of the Earth Bible Coloring and Activity Sheet

Salt of the Earth Activity and Coloring Sheet for Children's Ministry

A watercolor-and-salt art activity reinforces the message in a memorable way, giving children a visual reminder of how God uses them to make the world better. This sheet can be used several different ways depending on how much time you have and your children's age. The sheet includes the first part of the Bible verse from Matthew 5:13 and a biblical truth, "Just as salt makes this picture more beautiful, Jesus helps your life make the world better!" Available in both KJV and NIV.

What you will need: Cardstock (Heavy Paper), Colored Pencils, Watercolor Paints, Paint Brushes, Table Salt or Kosar Salt, and White Glue

How to Make:

1. Before class, print out the pattern and make copies.

2. Have your children color the areas they want to color, and then squeeze glue on the areas of the picture that they want to add salt texture.

3. Once the glue has set for a minute, shake off the excess salt onto a sheet of paper so you can use it for another picture. Children can then paint the salted are by filling their paint brushes with paint and dabbing it onto the salt.

Alternatives:

  1. You can color salt with food dye before class. Add a drop of food dye to the salt, mix it up, and let it dry. In class, they can use it on their picture like glitter. Apply glue to the areas where they want to add the salt, then shake the colored salt onto the picture.
  2. To make things even easier, you can just have them paint the picture with watercolor paint, and before it is dry, sprinkle salt all over the picture. The salt reacts with the paint and gives it a sparkly or textured look.

What Kind of Salty Are You? Bible Lesson

Bring Jesus’ words “You are the salt of the earth” to life with this engaging, hands-on Bible lesson designed for 2nd–4th grade learners. Based on Matthew 5:13, this lesson helps children understand what it means to influence the world for good by living differently because Jesus lives in them.

Students explore how salt was used in Bible times and why it was so valuable, then connect that understanding to everyday life through interactive discussion, simple science, and creative activities.

Children learn that salt enhances flavor and preserves what would otherwise spoil—just as God calls His people to bring kindness, truth, humility, and goodness into the world. This lesson also addresses the modern meaning of being “salty” and contrasts it with Jesus’ teaching, helping children recognize the difference between unkind attitudes and Christ-like behavior. Through relatable examples, students learn that while we aren’t always perfect, we can reflect Jesus by saying sorry when we mess up, asking for forgiveness, and choosing to make things right.

Don't Lose Your Salt Bible Truth Relay Race

Don't Lose Your Salt Relay Game for Salt of the Earth Bible Lesson

What you will need:

Flat Craft Spoons or similar items that do not readily hold salt

Cups with measurements on the outside, such as medicine cups

Painter's Tape

Small, Shallow Bowls filled with Salt

How to Play:

1. Use painter's tape to mark a start line on one side of the room. Place bowls filled with salt along the tape line.  Place the empty medicine cups on a table on the opposite side.

2. Break your students up into teams and give the first player on each team a craft spoon.

3. Remind your students that being the salt of the earth isn't always easy. It requires considerable work and concentration. Sometimes we mess up, but even our "mess-ups" can be used to show God's character and make the world a better place. Recognizing our faults, asking for forgiveness, and doing better shows Christ working through us.

4. Explain to your students that on the word "Go" they should scoop up some salt with their craft spoons, rush to the opposite side of the room and dump the salt into the cup.

5. Keep playing for several minutes and then blow a whistle for the children to stop.

6. Compare all the cups with salt to see which team collected the most salt.

7. Remind your students that they can be the "salt of the earth" even when they make mistakes if they remember to make things right.

Salt of the Earth Activity Sheet

Emphasize the Bible truth with this eye-catching activity sheet that features the Bible verse. Children paint the page with watercolor paints and then sprinkle salt over the wet paint to create sparkle and texture, making each picture unique. A short message at the bottom connects the activity to the lesson by explaining how reflecting Jesus’ character helps make the world better: “Just as salt makes this picture more beautiful, Jesus helps your life make the world better!”

Encourage students to take their artwork home and display it in a prominent place as a reminder to memorize the verse and to work on being “salt” every day.

Discover the Bible Verse Rebus Game

Matthew 5:13 Bible Verse Rebus Printable Game

Children try to figure out the Bible verse by taking turns removing sticky notes to reveal parts of it. To determine the verse, they try to figure out what words the pictures in the Rebus represent. When the students think they have figured out the verse, have them look it up in their Bible to see if they were correct.

To prepare, print out the patterns and cut the edge off one sheet so the sheets can be overlapped to make one complete picture.

Tape them together with clear tape. Place sticky notes over the display, covering each square. You may have to use more than one sticky note so that the image doesn’t show through. Number the sticky notes.

In class, have your children take turns removing the sticky notes. Place pieces of paper with matching numbers in a bag. Students should take turns pulling a paper out of the bag and removing the matching sticky note. The child who removes the note gets to guess the verse. Keep playing until all the notes are removed or the verse is guessed correctly.
