Lesson 2 - The Christmas Story "An Angel Tells The Good News"

This is the second lesson in "The Christmas Story" Series of Five Lessons. In this series of five Christmas lessons children make Christmas tree decorations that will remind them about part of the Christmas story

How to Make the Doily Angel Craft:

1. Cut a jumbo craft stick to make it 5 inches.

2. Tape or glue a jumbo craft stick in the center of a 4-doily.

 

Fold one side of the doily over the jumbo craft stick. Fold the other side over the jumbo craft stick overlapping the first fold.

3. Cut another doily in half. Use one half of the doily to make the angel's wings. Round off the corners and cut a dip in the center to form the wing shape.

4. Glue the wings to the back of the angel.

5. Draw a line in the center of the craft stick for legs. Draw on the face. Add decorative items to the angel.

6. Cut a piece of silver Chenille stem to make the angel's halo. Form it into a circle and glue it to the head.

7. To finish glue a ribbon to the back to hang the angel.

Children use paper punches to punch designs into the angels robe and wings, and then tape them to a TP roll. Make hair by winding yarn around a piece of cardboard. Tie it off and then cut it in half. Place the tied end inside the tube. Children will have fun styling the hair and adding a face. Use Chenille stems to make the halo. How to Make Hand Foot Angel Craft:

1. Print out the card Pattern.

2. Paint your child's hand with yellow paint and have him press them on the paper as shown for the angles wings. Let the paint dry.

3. Paint your child's foot with flesh colored paint and have him step on the paper as shown. Let the paint dry.

4. Draw on a halo and face. Use glitter glue to trace the halo.

How to Make the Folded Angel Craft:

1. Print out the angel wing pattern and use it to cut wing patterns from printer paper.

2. Fan-fold the pattern starting at one of the straight edges. Make the folds about 1/2" wide.

3. Fold the fan-folded wings in half and staple in the middle as shown in the picture below.

4. Cut printer paper into 6" lengths. The papers should measure 6" x 8 1/2".

5. In class have your children use paper punches to punch shapes into the angel's dress. They should punch along the two short ends as shown in the picture on the right. You may want to draw light lines on the ends that they should punch on.

6. When your children are done punching, fan-fold the papers starting at a long edge using 1/2" folds. Fold the fan-folded paper in half (shown in the picture below) so the punched edges meet. Glue the edges that meet together to make the dress.

7. Glue the wings on the dress by placing a line of glue along the edge of the bottom fold as show in the picture above.

8. Glue a 1 1/2" white pompom on for the head.

9. Glue some ribbon to the back so the angels can be hung on the tree.

Comments About this Craft:

I teach a children’s church class of 24+ children ages 3-6.  We loved the folded paper angel craft, but with so many children (and varying spans of attention), I found it difficult to work with glue.  As an alternative suggestion, pipe cleaners work very well.  We used glitter pipe cleaners to wrap round the middle of the angel’s body and wings and then attached a pompom ball.  The children absolutely loved the angel lesson. Thank you for all you do to make teaching fun! Pam

One thing I love about the lessons and crafts are that they can be adapted to different situations.  Living in Uganda we don't have access to all of the supplies listed, but there is usually something I can substitute.  In making the folded paper angel, I used a cotton ball for the head instead of a pom-pom.  For the decoration at the bottom, I cut shapes into the "skirt" while it was still folded just as you would do for a snowflake.  It came out very nice.  Thank you for your work!  It sure makes the teachers' preparation and teaching go easier. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 13:2, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." That means that we should treat strangers like friends because we never know, they may be angels."

Pick five children to stand up in front of the room. Have the other children place their heads down, with their eyes closed, on the table. Silently point to one of the children in the front of the room to be the "angel unaware". The "angel" should silently walk to the table and gently tap a child on the back, and then go stand back in line. When the teacher says, "An angel passed by" the children should all put their heads up. The child that was tapped stands up and tries to guess which one of the five children was the "angel" that tapped him or her. Keep playing until all the children have had a chance to guess and be the angel.

2. Print out a set of cards for every 4 or 5 children in your class. Write the words, "And she shall bring forth a son" one word per card on the back of the cards.

3. In class arrange your children in circles in groups of four or five. Give each group a set of cards. Have your children turn the cards over and place them in the middle of their circles. Write the verse on the board so everyone can see it. Have the children take turns turning over cards. They should try to find the first word of the verse first. If a child turns over any other card beside the first word, he should turn it back over. If a child picks up a card that is the next one in order, he gets to tape the card to the board under that word.

If you have younger children don't worry about them finding the cards in order. If they pick up a word card, they get to tape the card under the matching word on the board.

2. Write the words, "And she shall bring forth a son", one word per card, on the back of the cards.

3. Hide the angel cards around the room.

4. Tell your children that you have hidden some pictures of angels around the room to remind them that most of the time angels are invisible (we can't see them) because they are spiritual beings.

5. Write the Bible verse ("And she shall bring forth a son") on the board and tell your children what it says. Ask your children if they remember who said this in our story.

6. Tell them to go and look for the angels. When they find one they should bring it back and try to match up the word on the back of the card with one of the words on the board. Have them tape the word to the board. If you have a lot of children, you can use more of the verse.

The Christmas Story Sunday School Lesson Series for Children

 

Each week children add their decorations to the classroom tree. They will enjoy seeing the tree changing and getting more beautiful each week as ornaments are added. Use the decorations each week to review previous Bible lessons.

If you don't have room for a Christmas tree in your room, you can send the ornaments home with your children, or make a large paper tree and tape it to your wall.
